Six Garage Door Noises, What Each One Means, and Which Ones Mean Stop

Most people describe a garage door problem by what the door is doing. It is slow, it is sticking, it will not go up. That is fair enough, but it is the least useful half of the information, because half a dozen completely different faults all produce a door that will not go up.
The useful half is the sound. A garage door is a machine with a handful of load bearing parts, and each one fails with its own voice. Learn the six common noises and you can usually name the part yourself, before anybody looks at it.
Here they are, what causes each, and, just as importantly, how urgent each one actually is. That last part gets skipped a lot. Two of these noises mean stop using the door right now. The rest mean book something for a convenient day and stop worrying about it.
1. Grinding, Metal On Metal
The sound is low, harsh and continuous while the door moves. It is unmistakably metal running directly on metal, without the higher pitch of a squeal.
That is exactly what it is. A bearing has worn through and stopped separating two surfaces that were never meant to touch.
There are two places this comes from. The rollers, which have a small bearing inside each wheel, and the end bearing plates that carry the torsion shaft above the opening. Roller grinding moves with the door as it travels. End bearing grinding stays put, up in one of the top corners, and often gets louder as the shaft speeds up.
Both start the same way. The grease in the bearing dries out or gets washed out, the races corrode, the cage breaks up, and eventually there is nothing left doing the job a bearing was supposed to do.
Urgency: moderate. Weeks, not months. Grinding will not drop the door on your car. What it will do is grow. A worn end bearing lets the shaft wander, which pulls the cables out of true and starts wearing an oval into the plate itself. Caught early it is a roller set and two bearings. Left a season it becomes shaft and plate work, which is several times the price.
2. One Loud Bang
This is the loudest thing a garage door will ever do. People consistently describe it as a gunshot, and they are usually not in the garage when it happens. Plenty of these go off in the middle of the night with the door closed and stationary.
That is a torsion spring failing.
The spring sits on a shaft above the opening, wound to a set number of turns. The torque stored in it is what counterbalances the weight of the door, and on a standard double door that door weighs somewhere north of a hundred and fifty pounds. When the spring splits along a coil it unwinds in a fraction of a second, and every bit of that counterbalance vanishes at once. The bang is the coils slamming down the shaft.
What follows is a door that suddenly weighs what it actually weighs. It will not open by hand without real effort, and the opener will strain against it and get nowhere.
Urgency: stop now. This is the one. Do not press the button again, do not try to muscle the door up by hand, and if the car is inside and there is a side door, leave the car there. An unbalanced door is held by cables that were sized for a balanced one. Every attempt to run the opener strips its gears a little further and loads the cables and drums unevenly, which is how a spring job becomes a spring, cable and drum job.
3. Rhythmic Popping As The Door Travels
A distinct pop or bang, repeating at the same point in the travel every single time. Often two or three of them in sequence as the door goes up, then the same again on the way down.
The repeatability is the tell. Something is passing a particular spot and snapping past it instead of sliding through it.
Usually that is track alignment. A track that has been knocked out of true, a bracket that has loosened and let the track drift, or a joint between the vertical and curved sections that no longer lines up cleanly. The rollers reach that spot, bind for a moment, then jump past it.
The other cause is a worn hinge. The hinges between sections take a lot of flex, and once the pin holes go oval the sections move relative to each other more than they should. That movement snaps back audibly.
Urgency: moderate, but it escalates in a specific way. A popping door is putting a shock load into the panels several times a day. Panels are the expensive part of a garage door. A hinge is a small part and half an hour of labour, and a replacement section is a different conversation entirely. Fix it while it is still noise.
4. A Squeal That Changes With The Weather
Higher pitched than the grinding, thinner, and here is the distinguishing feature: it is loud on damp mornings and quieter by the afternoon. Householders often mention this almost apologetically, as if the weather detail is irrelevant. It is the single most diagnostic thing they say.
That is dry roller bearings, not yet failed.
Moisture in the air is what makes an underlubricated bearing squeal. In Huntington Beach we get the marine layer most mornings for a good part of the year, which is why this noise is so common here and why it follows such an obvious daily pattern.
The coastal air is also why it arrives early. Salt laden damp works into unsealed steel roller bearings, strips the grease and starts corrosion on the races. A steel roller that would run quietly for a decade inland can be clearly audible in four or five years within a mile of the water, and doors facing the onshore wind go first.
Urgency: low, but do not spray it. A squeal is a warning shot, not a failure. It will become the grinding in section one eventually, and there is no hurry beyond that. What matters is what you do in the meantime. The instinct is to reach for a can of penetrating spray and coat everything. That quietens it for a week, evaporates, takes the remaining lubricant with it, and runs down onto the track where it collects the fine sand this city has in abundance. The resulting paste wears rollers faster than dry running did. Sealed nylon rollers are the real answer.
5. Rattling In The Wind
The door shakes and clatters in its frame when a strong onshore wind gets up, and possibly a little as it travels too. Nothing is obviously wrong. The door works.
This is loose hardware, and it is normal. A door cycled four times a day is cycled well over a thousand times a year, and vibration backs bolts off. Hinge bolts, track bracket lags, and the struts that run horizontally across the wide sections all loosen over time.
Urgency: low, and honestly, it is a cheap job. Nothing here is going to fail dramatically. The reason to deal with it is that a loose hinge bolt lets the hinge move on its plate, which wears the hole oval, and then you need a hinge rather than a nut driver. An hour of tightening and torque checking heads that off.
If you want to do it yourself, this is the one on the list we would encourage. Nothing on the hinge or bracket side is under spring tension. Leave the bottom brackets alone, because those are, but the rest is straightforward work with a socket set.
6. A Hum With No Movement
The opener makes a low humming or straining noise when you press the button. The door does not move, or lifts an inch and stops. The light comes on. Everything looks alive.
This is the one people get wrong most often, and it costs them the most money when they do.
The overwhelmingly common cause is a broken spring, not a failed opener. The motor is working. It is simply being asked to lift the full unbalanced weight of the door, which is not something it was ever designed to do, so it strains and gives up. Because the noise comes from the opener, the opener gets blamed, and every week somewhere a perfectly serviceable unit gets replaced over a spring.
There is a two minute test that settles it. Pull the emergency release cord, which disconnects the door from the opener, then try lifting the door by hand. A door with good springs lifts with modest effort and will hold roughly where you leave it. A door with a broken spring feels enormously heavy and drops if you let go. If it feels heavy, the spring is your problem and the opener was innocent.
A genuinely failed opener usually presents differently anyway. Stripped drive gears make a whirring or clacking sound with the trolley not moving, and a dead capacitor tends to produce a hum with no light and no attempt to move at all.
Urgency: treat it as a broken spring until proven otherwise. Which puts it in the same category as the bang. Stop pressing the button, because holding a straining motor against a load it cannot shift is exactly how the drive gear gets destroyed, and then you really do need an opener.
The Short Version On Urgency
If you take one thing from this, take the sorting.
Stop using the door: a single loud bang, and a hum with no movement. Both mean a load bearing part has already failed and the door is not being counterbalanced. Also stop if the door starts moving unevenly or hanging at an angle, whatever noise accompanies it.
Deal with it within a few weeks: grinding, and rhythmic popping. Neither is dangerous today. Both get materially more expensive if they run, because both are chewing through a more expensive part while they make noise.
Book it whenever suits you: weather dependent squealing, and wind rattle. These are maintenance, not faults.
Two Things Worth Checking While Somebody Is There
The first is UL 325 entrapment protection. The photo eyes near the floor should stop and reverse the door if the beam is broken, and the door should also reverse when it meets a solid obstruction. Both get tested, not assumed. Beams knocked out of alignment by a bike or a bin are extremely common, and the door will often still close, just without a working safety.
The second applies to anything installed here since July 2019. California SB-969 requires a battery backup on residential openers, so the door still opens in a power cut. Backup batteries have a life of a few years and then quietly stop holding charge, which nobody notices until the power actually goes out. It gets tested rather than looked at.
